BWV 846 - Raison d'être

Access to music education remains uneven.While some children grow up surrounded by opportunities to sing, learn an instrument, or experience music collectively, many others never encounter music as part of their daily lives. BWV 846 was created in response to this imbalance. The initiative exists to ensure that children can access meaningful, high-quality music education regardless of their background, geography, or family circumstances.

The initiative is supported by thecommitment of its godmothers, Alice Taglioni and Angela Geremia. Known for herwork in cinema as well as for her long-standing relationship with music andpiano, Alice Taglioni embodies the values at the heart of BWV 846. Herengagement reflects a belief that access to music can play a decisive role in achild’s development, confidence, and sense of belonging.

Angela Geremia, who lives in New York City, brings a complementary perspective shaped by her background in sociology, education, and the performing arts. Her academic work on music and identity, her experience within artistic and cultural institutions, and her involvement in the project contribute to BWV 846’s international outlook and long-term development.

BWV 846 supports children directly throughs cholarships and access to programmes, while also working with schools and cultural partners to help create sustainable musical environments. It acts on several levels: enabling children to join choirs such as the International Youth Choir, supporting music education within schools, and helping fundprivate lessons when needed.

Beyond individual access, the initiative also invests in the conditions that make music education possible: rehearsal spaces, instruments, and the people who carry transmission forward, teachers, musicians, and educators.

Inclusion is central to the initiative’s vision. BWV 846 works with specialists and researchers to develop approaches adapted to neurodivergent children, ensuring that music education can welcome different ways of learning and expressing oneself. The aim is not uniformity, but access, creating spaces where every child can find a place through music.

BWV 846 was founded on a simple belief:music should not be a privilege. It is a shared cultural practice, a space for confidence and belonging, and a powerful way for children to connect with themselves and others. Ensuring access to that space is the reason the initiative exists.
